On 18 March 2024, Bénin Terminal, a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL) and operator of the Port of Cotonou container terminal, took delivery of 4 brand-new gantry cranes (RTGs) at the Port of Cotonou’s south quay, adding to the existing fleet of 12 RTGs. The new gantry cranes, which are larger than those currently in use, will optimise storage capacity (6 high compared with 5 high at present) and reduce the time taken to process container loading and unloading at the terminal.

 

Thanks to this new equipment, all Benin Terminal’s customers and partners, whether importers, exporters or shipowners, will benefit from a better quality of service.

 

Acquired from the Finnish manufacturer and constructor of lifting and handling equipment, Konecranes, at a total cost of 6.650 billion CFA francs (around €10 million), this new state-of-the-art equipment will have a significant impact on the terminal’s operational efficiency, bringing the number of gantry cranes operating at Benin Terminal to 16 units.

 

With more than €216 million already invested by the end of 2023, Benin Terminal's aim is to become a genuine regional growth logistics hub for Niger, Mali, Burkina-Faso and Nigeria. The acquisition of these 4 new RTG gantry cranes is part of a major investment programme that will enable Bénin Terminal to equip the port of Cotonou with a new quay gantry crane (STS) by the end of 2024, and 6 new RTGs and 3 quay gantry cranes (STS) in 2026.
