Environment Day: AGL reinforces its commitment with the Green Terminal Label
On the occasion of World Environment Day, AGL, a major player in transport and logistics in Africa, highlights the significant progress made in terms of environmental impact thanks to its “Green Terminal” label. Launched in June 2021, this label demonstrates the company’s commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its port activities and promoting sustainable practices. The “Green Terminal” label provides a concrete solution to meet the challenges of the energy transition, reducing the impact on the environment in the container terminals it operates.
With the help of Bureau Veritas, an independent body that participates in the creation of the label and is the third party body that is authorized to issue the Green Terminal label, AGL has put in place eight essential pillars for this label, namely, an optimized environmental management system, a societal commitment to local communities, the construction of low-consumption infrastructures that comply with international standards, the use of ecological equipment, the implementation of digital solutions, the management and optimized recycling of waste, the treatment and monitoring of water and air, as well as the training of employees in environmental best practices.
Thanks to the investments made by the company in 2023, and several initiatives such as improving waste management, reducing fossil fuel consumption, gradually electrifying facilities and adopting digital solutions, AGL has significantly reduced its carbon footprint. In 2023, on its activity “port terminals”, the company issued 110,805 tonnes of CO₂, or 19.77 kg of CO₂ per 20-foot equivalent unit unit (TEU) container. In comparison, in 2022, AGL’s activity emitted 125,631 tonnes of CO₂, or 20.18 kg of CO₂ per 20-foot equivalent container. This significant reduction is a testament to the effectiveness of AGL’s efforts in terms of environmental performance.
The “Green Terminal” label is awarded after a continuous evaluation based on a continuous improvement process of which each annual cycle includes a self-assessment that determines the initial score, the implementation of improvement actions and a certification audit by a third-party auditor of Bureau Veritas. The company’s 12 terminals now labeled have achieved high levels of certification, with some such as CIT (Côte d’Ivoire Terminal) exceeding the score of 90% (3 stars) and MPS (Meridian Port Services) in Ghana which totals more than 80% (2 stars).
«We are determined to be at the forefront of the green transition in the transport and logistics sector. The Green Terminal label illustrates our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future for all. We have started thinking about the evolution of this label with the ambition of making it essential in the international port sector» Olivier Restoueix, QHSE and CSR Director at AGL
